There is a big difference between “Solfege”, “Functional Ear Training” and UseYourEar.
In a few words, neither “Solfege” nor “Functional ear training” can be considered a method:
- “Solfege” is just a nomenclature system, it only gives you indications for how to name notes in relation to a tonal center. It doesn’t include any specific exercises and doesn’t clarify at all how you should think when practicing.
- On the other hand “Functional Ear Training” is just a very limited basic exercise that will only train a super-specific component of your melodic recognition skills. The issue is that this exercise doesn’t recreate “real melodies” in realistic conditions, so, in the end, most musicians become good at the exercise but are still unable to recognize real melodies. They still miss some crucial components.
To recap everything, here are the 3 main reasons why both Solfege and Functional Ear Training can’t be considered comprehensive methods:
-
They don't give you a clear step-by-step process and action plan to follow, in order to get the results.
They don’t explain you how to think, what to practice, when to practice it, how to practice it, why to practice it and what results to expect from it.
-
They leave out multiple components that are crucial to recognize real music, in real time.
-
They don’t take into account chord progressions at all.
On the other hand, the UseYourEar method is a comprehensive step-by-step method. It will allow you to understand exactly what to practice, when to practice it, how to practice it, why to practice it and what results to expect from it.
It includes a very clear step-by-step path that will allow you to gradually develop advanced skills, no matter your current level.
Moreover, UseYourEar takes into account all the components of our relative pitch skills as well as the fundamental work on chord progressions. Which is indeed a very important aspect of ear training and it’s totally crucial for developing skills like improvisation, intonation, musical memory, etc.
Lastly, UseYourEar is entirely based on rigorous scientific foundations. The scientific background, combined with the experience gained after working with hundreds of students 1 on 1, gave us an in-depth understanding of how we perceive musical pitch. This allows us to explain to you the exact mental process you should adopt for each ear training task. Indeed, our course includes very detailed action-steps that allow you to understand exactly how to think, what to focus on, etc. but most importantly it allows you to clearly understand what you shouldn’t do and why. This level of accuracy and detail is totally exclusive to our program and it’s one of the main reasons why our method is so effective for all kinds of musicians. Without this level of clarity it’s very easy to fall victim of inefficient thought processes and get stuck somewhere.
